Hidden Gem in Jersey City
Jersey City has a hidden gem called Moore’s Lounge aka Bill & Ruth’s which has been in business for over 40 years. I was totally unaware of this until I was doing a little research on jazz in Jersey City. This place looks very cool and it’s definitely on my “to-do” list. If you are a lover of live jazz music and enjoy intimate settings, then Moore’s sounds like the place for you.
Every Sunday, host Winard Harper (a world renown drummer and musician who has played with the best of the best jazz musicians) presents the “Meet the Artist” series where an icon of jazz performs in a 3-hour session which features interaction between the audience and the artist. The owners also serve free food during the session and have inexpensive drinks. Sunday’s artist is Akua Dixon. She is a cellist, arranger, composer, vocalist, and educator. Akua Dixon is a jazz string pioneer who has thrived in a vast array of settings. She’s collaborated on world premieres of major works by reed stars Paquito D’Rivera (winner of 14 Grammy awards) and James Carter. Dixon also created the string arrangements for the five-time Grammy-winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Moore’s also has a jazz jam session on Friday nights that has gotten great reviews.
